Feathers
Angela Sheik
Fingers in the fire
Remind me that we
All have parts we need to attend.
Hearts that burn are saying something.
Quick, before they’re quiet again,
Take the scalpel to my skin,
Put some feathers in.
I may bleed and cry
But I’ll soon have wings to fly.
Standing in the doorway,
I see you leaving,
Holding on to one thin string,
Cracking like the Mona Lisa,
Shattered by the sting.
Take the scalpel to my skin,
Put some feathers in.
I may bleed and cry
But I’ll soon have wings to fly.

Run For Cover

Run for Cover
Angela Sheik
Wind picks up and it steals my fedora,
Breaks the arms of my poor umbrella.
People around us seem to scatter
Storm coming over, better run for cover.
Look at the way that the clouds are churning
Look at us run like our backs are burning.
Quickly revealing, I’ve got a feeling
We’re going to have a leak in our outdoor ceiling
Don’t be afraid of the rain.
Run for cover, we’re okay.
Don’t be afraid the rain,
It’s just rain.
You can count this and it’s a sure bet
There is always rain and we’ll always get wet
No need to get upset about it.
Best thing to do is smile and take it.
Grins peak through these rain-streaked faces
Laughing and running to dryer places.
All better with you near me.
Soaking but in good company,
This storm, too, will pass on over.
Don’t waste tears on rainy days.
Laugh, don’t cry while you run for cover.
Face it with a smile on your face.

Before I Start Screaming

Before I Start Screaming
by Angela Sheik
I’m starting to go crazy, feel it climbing up my skin, and I can’t stand another minute staring at this screen. I wish that you would call me, suggest we waste the day because I have a feeling that it’s just minutes away before I start screaming.
Days and years and decades since I laughed ‘til I was crying. I’m tired of treating life like it’s a waiting room for dying. So gather up your papers and meet me across the street before we go insane, before I lose my little brain and start screaming. We’re going to start screaming.
I’m on the edge of reason. I’m going to start screaming.

Fill Me
Angela Sheik
So here is the problem, can’t figure it out,
I’m pouring in happiness but it keeps leaking right back out.
I tried adding hope, I thought it would stick, but my heart is cracked and cannot hold a drop of it.
So I am calling to the Maker of the stars
‘cause I hear He’s got experience with hearts like ours.
If He filled the earth, the sky, the raging sea,
then He can fill me.
The longer we live the more that we fray until all our stitches stretch and break and then they tear away.
So I’m calling my Tailor, He’ll know what to do.
Moving His gentle thread and needle ‘til I’m good as new.
If He filled my skin with breath and blood and bones,
If He knows each strand of hair my head has ever known,
If He filled the earth, the sky, the raging sea,
Then He can fill me.

Chickadee
Angela Sheik
In the morning we sing from the treetops
At noontime we whistle from the shade
In the evening on the old porch swing we drink our lemonade, me and my darling, my chickadee.
And we sing, “Chickadee-dee-dee.”
As we wander the heartland together
Playing hide-and-go-seek among the corn,
I smile to hide the tears that slide.
I think that I was born to be your darling, my chickadee.
Though the years may grow cold as the winter,
And as long as a hot summer mile,
You will always be my melody,
My sweet pea, my family, my darling, my chickadee.
Oh, darling chickadee, sing your pretty song for me.

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I'm found,
Was blind, but now, I see.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come.
It's Grace that's brought me safe this far
and Grace will lead us home.
When we've been here ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
then when we've first begun.

Rumblin'
words and music by Angela Sheik
See the smoke line rising, hear the whistle blow.
Here she comes, the mighty train, the one that we all know.
Feel the tremble of the tracks beat against your spine
'Cause she's coming. Can't you feel it? Can't you feel the rumblin'?
The Engineer's no stranger, he knows us all by name.
He’s coming for the holy and perhaps a few that ain’t.
Hope you've got your ticket, I know that I’ve got mine.
'Cause it's coming. Can't you feel it? Can't you feel the rumblin'?
As the train approaches, you can hear the Master call.
He’s calling for his children. Lord, you know he knows them all.
His voice is like the thunder crashing through the station wall.
He's coming. Can't you feel it? Can't you feel the rumblin'?
He says, “Matthew, you’ve robbed a few,
But don't you worry, my boy, I love you.
Martha, dear, you're way too busy.
Let it go, girl. Come sit beside me, now.
Paul, I hear you hate my church,
But now it's time for you to get to work.
Rahab, honey, thing of beauty.
Can't you tell you're precious to me?
Peter, come and stand beside me
even though you did deny me.
Leave your burdens! Feel my loving!
Live your life like death is coming!
It comes a rumblin'!”
